A look inside the NPEU Clinical Trials Unit: Exploring the role of Trial Manager

Published on Thursday, 27 November 2025

A Trial manager plays a central role in planning, running and overseeing clinical trials. At the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit Clinical Trials Unit, each trial is overseen by a Trial Manager. They oversee all aspects of a trial and ensure it is conducted safely, ethically, and according to regulatory standards. There are many different work streams involved in a clinical trial and their role is very varied. They help create many of the documents for a trial. They will also work closely with staff at hospital sites to train them in trial processes. They work to encourage recruitment with hospitals and to ensure that the sites are sending in trial data in a timely way. They have a key role in monitoring progress and will write and present reports on trial performance. They also promote the trial online and at conferences and along with finance, help oversee the trial budget.

Elizabeth Nuthall has worked as a Senior Trial Manager at NPEU CTU since 2022. In the video below, she speaks about how she entered the field of trial management, what her role involves, and what it's like to work as a trial manager at NPEU CTU, as well as offering advice for those aspiring to pursue a career in trial management.
