UKMidSS Steering Group membership opportunity

Published on Wednesday, 21 May 2025

The UK Midwifery Study System (UKMidSS) is currently seeking a neonatologist to join its Steering Group. UKMidSS was launched in 2015 and is a research infrastructure for carrying out national observational studies and surveys of practice in midwifery units. Currently, all alongside midwifery units (AMUs) and freestanding midwifery units (FMUs) in the UK contribute to UKMidSS. Previous studies conducted have investigated outcomes for women with higher BMI, a history of PPH, diabetes, and advanced maternal age. Previous surveys have investigated admission criteria, preparedness for emergencies, and postnatal care provided. For further information on the studies conducted, please visit our current studies webpage. For a summary of published work, please visit our publications webpage.

Due to the retirement of one of our Steering Group members, we are now seeking a neonatologist with some research experience to join the multi-disciplinary UKMidSS Steering Group. The Steering Group meets three times a year (either face-to-face in Oxford or virtually) and provides overall strategic direction and governance for the programme, monitors progress of ongoing studies and plans future studies. Membership of the Steering Group is not remunerated, but travel expenses are paid and contributions to the group may be considered part of continuing professional development. Retired members of the Steering Group will be available for mentoring if necessary.

Expressions of interest will be considered against the following criteria:

  • Evidence of awareness of UKMidSS at a local level;
  • Evidence of interest in care and practice in midwifery units;
  • Experience of forging links within and beyond your professional group;
  • Senior research, audit or clinical governance experience in maternity care;
  • Experience of committee work (local or national).

For an informal discussion about this role, you can contact Tabitha or Rachel using the details below:

If you would like to apply, please submit a CV (no more than two pages) and a short covering letter to ukmidss@npeu.ox.ac.uk explaining why you are interested in this role.

The closing date for expressions of interest is Friday 13th June 2025.
