The neoGASTRIC trial opened its first 2 hospitals last week, Royal Cornwall Hospital in Cornwall, UK and Monash Children's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.

Recruitment has got off to a great start with Australia already recruiting 6 babies to the trial and the UK recruited their first baby on 20th June. Congratulations to both hospitals for being the first in your country to recruit!

The neoGASTRIC trial is looking at whether routinely measuring gastric residual volumes (checking what is in the stomach before feeding) helps babies born more than 6 weeks early, to safely get to full feeds more quickly. The trial is comparing two ways of caring for babies having tube feeds, both ways are standard care commonly used in neonatal units across the UK and Australia. The trial will be the largest individually randomised trial in neonates ever run in the world, and is aiming to recruit 7040 babies over the next 3 years.
