Summary

Anaemia in pregnancy remains a significant problem despite national treatment guidelines. The sim of this research was to evaluate the evidence for antenatal screening of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia against the UK National Screening Committee criteria which is used to consider if a national screening programme should be introduced. The main gaps identified in this literature review were the lack of studies analysing the clinical consequences of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia. In addition, there have been no economic evaluations of national screening programmes for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia. The main conclusion was that further high quality studies are required to confirm whether a screening programme would reduce maternal and infant morbidity and be cost effective.
