Work package 2
This work package is complete and comprised an ethnographic case study, guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR).
What was the study about?
The ethnography aimed to describes the practice of IA, the organisational and systems context for IA, and identify the facilitators of and challenges to IA practice in line with national guidance.
Data collection took place between November 2023 and December 2024, and involved approximately1-3 weeks in each of the seven purposively selected NHS sites. Sites were selected to ensure variation in geographic location; size and type of unit; ethnic and social diversity of population; and IA/monitoring practices. Data collection included:
- 313 hours of observation of midwives
- 37 recorded interviews with midwives and health professionals;
- 98 informal conversations with midwives and health professionals;
- 13 observations of IA being used in labour;
- Audit of 115 case notes where IA was used for at least part of the woman's labour.
What did the study tell us?
Analysis of the data informed work package 4, and is being written up for publication.
