BASE Studies Relaunched

We're delighted to announce that the BASE Trial re-design received all the necessary approvals and was officially relaunched as the BASE studies on 8 September 2026.

The BASE studies include:

• Feasibility study – a smaller-scale continuation of the original BASE trial to assess the feasibility of conducting a trial in very preterm babies with metabolic acidosis.
• Observational study – providing an opportunity to collect valuable information on the prevalence of metabolic acidosis, how it is being managed and the association on health outcomes for very preterm babies.
• Qualitative study – exploring the experiences and perspectives of parents and healthcare professionals involved in BASE, helping us to better understand their experiences of the study and generate recommendations for a future definitive trial.

We would like to thank all of our participating sites and everyone who has supported BASE so far. We're excited to begin this next phase and look forward to working with our sites as recruitment gets underway.
