Health Economics

Health economics research at the NPEU involves work both in the analysis of trends in resources for care and in economic evaluations of aspects of care. All work on economic aspects of care involves close collaboration with other members of the NPEU, including staff involved with paediatric follow-up, midwifery research, social science research and clinical trials co-ordinated by the NPEU (see Trials page).

In addition, the health economists at the NPEU collaborate with external clinical and health economics researchers at the Nuffield Department of Population Health in Oxford, as well as with researchers in other parts of the United Kingdom and overseas. The economics group offers teaching and advice to members of the NPEU and others on health economics issues relevant to maternity and neonatal care.

The 2006 NPEU Annual Report contains a section on economic evaluation studies, and provides details of our economic analyses based upon observational data, our systematic reviews of economic aspects of perinatal care and our methodological research.
