Rheumatology

What is the MAMA Study?

The MAMA Study aims to find out the effects of temporarily stopping or continuing biologics during pregnancy. It will compare whether women who continue their biologics throughout pregnancy have better arthritis control compared to those who stop before 28 completed weeks' gestation and restart no earlier than 2 weeks after the end of pregnancy. We will assess the impact on their pregnancy, their infant (including immune response), and the costs associated with this decision. The trial is looking to recruit pregnant women with any inflammatory arthritis (RA, AxSpA, PsA, or JIA) prescribed any currently licensed biologic DMARD (except rituximab).

For further information please watch the video below or read the MAMA Protocol or Protocol Summary.

The overall results of this trial will provide valuable guidance for clinicians, patients, and policy makers.

Collaboration

We are currently seeking collaboration with rheumatologists to assist with the trial, by signposting MAMA Trial information to women with inflammatory arthritis being treated with biologics, who are pregnant or planning pregnancy. A MAMA Resource Pack is available which contains the following:

  • A Summary Protocol – An overview of the MAMA Study for clinical staff
  • MAMA Information Sheets – An introduction to the MAMA Study for patients
  • MAMA QR Cards – Business card-sized cards with a QR code that links to information for patients and self-referral guidance on the MAMA Website
  • MAMA Posters – Patient-facing posters to be displayed in clinic spaces and waiting rooms where appropriate

What to do with these resources

We would be very grateful if your team could share these resources with women who are on a biologic for inflammatory arthritis and are planning a pregnancy or are pregnant, to signpost them to the MAMA study. Your support in helping us reach eligible women is vital to the success of this important research.

All resources guide women to the MAMA Website, where they can find out more about the study and how they can participate. The MAMA Co-ordinating Team will link women who self-refer to their local MAMA Recruiting Site.

If you would like to know how your department might support the MAMA Trial, or if you would like help to build links with your local obstetric unit please email mama@npeu.ox.ac.uk.

MAMA aims to recruit 328 women, over a 48-month period, predominantly across 35 Obstetric units. As each site opens to recruitment, the online MAMA Site Map is updated, to help you find your local recruiter.

Thank you for your time and consideration. If you have any queries, please contact us.
