Educational outcomes in a population-based cohort of infants born with gastroschisis

This study will investigate the educational outcomes amongst children born with gastroschisis who are now aged 7-9. The study will be undertaken using questionnaires sent, with parental consent, to teachers of children from a cohort of children originally described in a BAPS-CASS study. Consent will be sought from parents to contact their child's teacher to obtain information about their child's academic performance and special educational needs. Parents will be asked to speak with the teacher and confirm they are happy to be contacted before they send the teacher's contact details to the research team.

A questionnaire will then be sent to teachers which will collect information in four domains. Firstly, information about special educational needs and additional educational support will be obtained. Secondly, the teacher will be asked to score the child's academic attainment and thirdly, to provide data from formal educational assessments such as Key Stage 1, the Year 1 phonics test and the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP). Finally, the teacher will be asked to complete a version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).
